Arterial hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a medical condition where the blood pressure (BP) is chronically elevated. For the general population, hypertension is defined as a systolic BP of 140 mm Hg or higher or a diastolic BP of 90 mm Hg or higher.
Many people have hypertension without knowing it, because high blood pressure has no symptoms.
There is no cure for primary hypertension, but blood pressure can almost always be reduced with the correct treatment. The goal of this treatment is to prevent the complications of hypertension. Uncontrolled hypertension can cause strokes, which can lead to brain or neurological damage.
In many cases, program suggested to reduce blood pressure has three elements: changes in the diet, a plan of regular exercise and antihypertensive medications.
