The heart contractions are controlled by chemical impulses. The rate of impulse’s fire controls the beat of the heart.
The cells that create these rhythmical impulses are called pacemaker cells, and they directly control the heart rate. Artificial pacemaker device can be used in case of damage to the body's intrinsic conduction system to produce these impulses synthetically.
Pacemaker regulates irregular contractions of the heart. Pacemakers prescribed to patients with severe symptomatic bradycardia, when heart rate is extremely slow (fewer than 60 beats per minute). They are also used in some cases to slow a fast heart rate (tachycardia).
Before undergo pacemaker implantation many different cardiac tests should be completed.
Patients are advised to fast 6-8 hours before the surgical procedure, and sedative drugs are usually given to relax the patient.
