A blood fat profile is a number of blood tests that expose important information about the types, amount and distribution of the fats (lipids) in the bloodstream. The two main lipids that are measured are cholesterol and triglycerides. This test is frequently performed to determine risk of coronary heart disease. High cholesterol levels can lead to atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease (CAD) or a heart attack. Hyperthyroidism or cirrhosis of the liver may be diagnosed by providing blood fat profile test.
The lipid profile includes total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol (often called good cholesterol), LDL-cholesterol (often called bad cholesterol), and triglycerides.
The result of lipid profile check up is used to develop a plan of treatment and follow-up. Cholesterol measurement should be provided at least once every 5 years, but more frequently if total number is elevated, HDL is low, and/or a person has cardiac risk factors.
