Hair replacement is a procedure aimed at covering hair loss on certain areas of the scalp.
Several techniques are used in hair replacement surgery. Sometimes, two or more techniques are used to achieve the best results.
Usually back and side’s areas of the head serve as donor areas, if hair growth there is healthy. Hair replacement consists of removing the donor hair from the back of the head, dividing it into individual hair units and then implanting them in the hairline and on the top of the head. Hair grafts may differ by size and shape; from round-shaped punch grafts (contain 10-15 hairs) to very small micro-grafts (contain one to two hairs). Course of several surgical sessions may be needed to achieve satisfactory hair fullness. In general, interval of several months is usually recommended between each session.
The hair transplant is performed under local anesthesia. On average, a procedure of 1500 grafts would last about 6 hours. Hair replacement surgery is usually performed in outpatient surgery center.
