Hepatology is concerned with disorders of the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts. Hepatology includes the study of acute and chronic hepatitis, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, genetic and metabolic liver diseases and their complications, liver cancer, liver transplantation, drug metabolism and other.
Liver functions frequently overlap with other organs, and some of the liver's functions involve complicated biochemical pathways.
Liver diseases are quite frequent and often silent until major complications arise. Among liver diseases: fatty liver, cirrhosis, cancer, viral hepatitis and more. In many cases liver diseases come secondarily to a problem elsewhere in the body. Some liver diseases are highly contagious. Treatment of liver diseases ranges from taking specific medications to surgery, and in severe cases liver transplantation. |
